When Asa Trusted the Lord—and When He Didn’t
When the enemy first threatened King Asa, he cried out to the Lord for help.
“And Asa cried out to the LORD his God and said, ‘LORD, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power. Help us, O LORD our God, for we trust in You, and in Your name we come against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God; let no man prevail against You.’” (2 Chronicles 14:11)
The response was immediate.
“So the LORD struck down the Ethiopian Cushites before Asa and Judah, and the Cushites fled.” (2 Chronicles 14:12)
Later in Asa’s life, another threat arose—but this time, his response was different. Instead of crying out to the Lord, Asa sought help from another king.
“At that time Hanani the seer came to King Asa of Judah and said, ‘Because you relied on the king of Aram and did not rely on the LORD your God, therefore the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand.’” (2 Chronicles 16:7)
The prophet reminded Asa of God’s faithfulness in the past.
“Were not the Cushites and Libyans a huge army with chariots and horsemen? Yet because you relied on the LORD, He gave them into your hand. For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.” (2 Chronicles 16:8–9)
Asa did not receive this correction well. He became angry, imprisoned the seer, and even oppressed some of the people during that time.
Very simply stated, Asa trusted the Lord in one battle—and then, when faced with another, he chose to trust in man instead.
I’m sharing this because it is easy to begin strong—full of zeal, faith, and confidence—and then, over time, grow weary. When pressure continues, we can slip into depending on logic, strategy, and human reasoning instead of continuing to trust the Lord.
We all do this. We are raised in a culture that teaches us to rely on the carnal, logical mind to solve problems. Our culture does not value faith—believing before seeing.
But Scripture reminds us otherwise.
Do not grow weary in doing the right thing. Do not look for shortcuts. Lean fully on the Lord and continue to trust Him.
“For the eyes of the LORD move about on all the earth to strengthen the heart that is completely toward Him.”
