A Caution Concerning “Shadow Work” Counseling
There is a counseling trend gaining traction today often referred to as “shadow work.” You may hear it described as returning, in your imagination, to a moment in childhood when you were hurt and then speaking comfort and reassurance to your younger self.
At first glance, this approach may seem gentle or even helpful. It can stir emotions and create a temporary sense of relief. But emotional relief is not the same as healing—and methods matter.
This kind of practice subtly shifts the source of healing away from Christ and places it within the self. Rather than bringing wounds into the light of God’s truth, it invites repeated revisiting of pain, opening doors that were never meant to be reopened in that way. Instead of closure, it often creates new layers of unresolved hurt that demand further “healing” sessions.
Another related practice appears in some retreats or group settings where individuals are encouraged to reenact pain by yelling at or verbally confronting those who hurt them. While this may be presented as cathartic, it is not biblical healing. In reality, it becomes an act of accusation and cursing rather than restoration.
Jesus gave us a very different instruction. He told us to forgive and to bless. Healing flows through surrender, truth, and grace—not through rehearsing pain or releasing rage.
Practices like shadow work do not neutralize darkness; they stir it. They focus attention on wounds rather than on the finished work of the Cross. Scripture never instructs us to heal ourselves by revisiting trauma through imagination. Instead, we are told to bring our hearts to the Lord, renew our minds with truth, and allow the Holy Spirit to comfort, restore, and transform us.
True healing does not come from summoning the past. It comes from submitting the past to Jesus.
We must be discerning about methods that feel spiritual or therapeutic but draw us away from Christ-centered healing. Not every practice that produces emotion produces freedom.
Stay anchored in the Word. Let Jesus define healing. And choose the path that leads to peace, forgiveness, and lasting freedom.
