Granny went to Heaven many years ago, but I Think My Granny Is Getting Dressed for the Trip Back!
I don’t want us to be ignorant concerning those who have fallen asleep, or to grieve like those who have no hope.
“For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.”
— 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14
That promise carries more comfort and certainty than we often realize.
Those who have died in Christ have not been forgotten, misplaced, or left behind. Scripture is clear: God will bring them back with Him. What looks like loss to us is, in truth, a temporary separation.
According to the Dake Commentary, there are several important truths revealed in this passage.
All who die in Christ will be brought back from heaven to receive resurrected bodies. Death is not the end—it is a pause before restoration.
Those who are alive in Christ at that time will not die, but will be changed in a moment. Mortality will put on immortality.
This event is the coming of the Lord in the air, not His return to the earth. It is a divine gathering, not a judgment scene.
It will be the Lord Himself—no substitute, no delegate—who descends from heaven to gather His people.
The dead in Christ will rise first, and then the living will be changed.
Together, the Church—every believer in Christ from Abel until that moment—will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air.
This is not fear-filled doctrine. It is hope-filled promise.
Sometimes, when I think about those who have gone before us—those who loved Jesus and finished their race—I can’t help but smile and think, they’re getting ready. Getting dressed. Getting prepared for the trip back.
“How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news,”
and how faithful is the God who will guide our feet in the way of peace.
Believe.
