📌 WHAT THE NEW TESTAMENT TEACHES ABOUT DEMONS

A Study Handout Based on Rick Renner’s Teaching and

1. Demons: What They Are and How They Behave

1.1 Highly Organized Under Satan

Ephesians 6:12 shows a structured hierarchy:
• Principalities
• Powers
• Rulers of darkness
• Spiritual wickedness in high places

Demons are not random or chaotic — they are military-grade organized.

\*\*1.2 Demon “Possession” vs Demonization

(Greek: daimonizomai)\*\*

The Bible never uses the term “possessed.”
The Greek word means:
• Demonized
• Under demonic influence
• Affected or tormented, not always total takeover

Most cases in Scripture are degrees of influence, not full possession.

1.3 Demons Love Drama

In the Gospels, demons:
• scream
• shriek
• convulse
• throw people to the ground

They attempt to create fear and spectacle.

Jesus told them:

“Be muzzled.”
“Hold your peace.”
“Come out.”

He never entertained demonic theatrics. Neither should we.

1.4 Demons Can Appear to People

(Job 4:15)
Not common — but Biblically recorded.

1.5 Demons Can Be Driven Out by Believers

Deliverance is a normal part of Christian ministry:
• “These signs shall follow them that believe… they shall cast out devils.”
— Mark 16:17

But Renner emphasizes:

Deliverance is Step 1.
Filling the person with the Word and Spirit is Step 2.

Otherwise the enemy attempts to return with reinforcements
(Matthew 12:43-45).

1.6 Demons Seduce and Lead into Doctrinal Error

(1 Timothy 4:1)
• False teachings
• New Age
• “Christian-sounding” deception

These are often spiritual, not intellectual, problems.

1.7 Demons Frequent Occult Environments

(1 Corinthians 10:20–21)
• Pagan temples
• Idolatrous practices
• Occult holidays or rituals

Where occult activity is present, unclean spirits gather.

1.8 Demons Can Inhabit Animals

(Matthew 8:31; Mark 5; Luke 😎

If they cannot enter people, they seek lesser hosts.

1.9 Demons Will Torture During the Tribulation

(Revelation 9:1–7)

Demonic cruelty increases in the last days.

1.10 Demons Will Ultimately Be Imprisoned

(Revelation 20:10)

The Abyss awaits them — they fear this judgment.

2. The Behavior & Characteristics of Demons

2.1 Demons Scream (Greek: anakrazō)

They shriek repeatedly — drama on repeat.

Our job?

“Zip it up and come out.”

2.2 Demons Can Be Panicked by the Name of Jesus

(James 2:19)

Even the mention of Jesus’ name causes trembling.

2.3 Demons Talk — A Lot

(Mark 1; Mark 5; Luke 4; Acts 19)

If not stopped, they will:
• converse
• argue
• accuse
• distract

Discernment is crucial in counseling situations.

2.4 Demons Are Intelligent

They know:
• Jesus
• Spiritual authority
• People
• Territory

(Acts 19:15 — “Jesus I know, and Paul I know…”)

2.5 Demons Are Unclean

Described as:
• filthy
• foul
• sexually perverse
• morally corrupt

Behind much perversion is an unclean spirit.

2.6 Demons Are Violent

(Mark 5; Acts 19)

They manifest:
• rage
• supernatural strength
• destructive behavior

Unless checked by authority.

2.7 Demons Cause Terror

(Matthew 8:28)

People under demonic influence may terrorize entire regions.

2.8 Demons Can Manifest Superhuman Strength

(Mark 5:4)

Chains cannot restrain a demonized person.

3. Demons in Personal Affliction

3.1 Demons Can Cause Physical Impairment

(Matthew 9:33; 12:22–30)
• Blindness
• Deafness
• Muteness

Not always — but sometimes directly spiritual.

3.2 Demons Can Create Suicidal Urges

(Mark 5:5)

Self-harm and suicide attempts are often demonic torment.

Renner shares real-life examples of people unable to die because demons torment them but block the act.

3.3 Demons Work Through Occult “Lunatic” Activity

(Matthew 17:15)

The word “lunatic” was tied to:
• moon-phase occult rituals
• spiritual influence tied to the moon

This shows the connection between occult practice and demonization.

3.4 Demons Can Be Religious

They quote Scripture.
They mimic piety.
They disguise themselves under “holy” behavior.

Example: Renner’s catacomb story of a person praying and crossing themselves — then growling like an animal.

3.5 Demons Believe in Christ

(James 2:19)

They know:
• who Jesus is
• what His blood accomplished
• the power of His authority

They believe — but do not obey.

3.6 Demons Beg

(Matthew 8; Mark 5; Luke 😎

Under pressure:
• they plead
• negotiate
• try to choose their place of eviction

3.7 Demons Recognize Authority

(Acts 19:15)

They know when a believer is:
• submitted to God
• clean in conscience
• bold in authority

3.8 Demons Can Be Resisted

(James 4:7)

Submission to God produces the power to resist.
Resistance causes them to flee in terror.

4. Jesus’ Teaching on Authority Over Demons

(Luke 10:17–19)

4.1 The Seventy Discover Their Authority

They return shouting with joy:

“Lord, even the demons are subject unto us through Your name!”

“Subject” = hupotassō
• To fall in line
• To submit like a soldier under orders
• To obey rank

Demons rank below believers in Christ.

4.2 Jesus Confirms Their Authority

“I give you power…” — exousia
Delegated authority, legal right.

To tread — pateō
• trample
• crush
• advance by stepping on

On serpents and scorpions — symbols of:
• Satan
• demonic strike
• venomous attacks

4.3 Your Position in Christ is Superior

“Over all the power of the enemy.”
“Over” — epi
• a position of advantage
• above and superior

Enemy’s “power” is dunamis — raw force, brute strength.
But your positional authority is higher.

4.4 The Enemy’s Nature

“Enemy” — echthros
• deep hatred
• irreconcilable hostility
• intent to inflict harm

This matches John 10:10:

“The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy.”

5. How Deliverance Should Be Done

5.1 We Don’t Stir Up Demons
• No theatrics
• No drama
• No prolonged shouting
• No conversations

It drains:
• spiritual strength
• the atmosphere
• the faith of onlookers

Jesus:

“Be muzzled.”
“Hold your peace.”
“Come out.”

Simple, authoritative, final.

5.2 Only Once Did Jesus Allow a Demon to Speak

(Gadarene demoniac)

Why? To reveal:
• the number (Legion = ~6,000)
• the reason for resistance
• the scale of the infestation

This teaches us:

The only time you question a demon is when
the Spirit leads and you need strategic information
to complete the eviction.

5.3 Casting Out = Evicting

Greek ekballō =
• eject
• thrust out
• drive out forcibly
• evict someone who has no legal right to stay

We do not “negotiate.”
We evict in Jesus’ name.

FAITH DECLARATION

In the name of Jesus, I have authority over demons.
I resist the enemy and he flees from me.
I trample serpents and scorpions and all the power of the devil.
No weapon formed against me will prosper.
I stand in Christ’s victory, and I help others walk free,
by the blood, the Word, and the name of Jesus. Amen.
