Guarding Life with Your Words
“Whoever desires life and loves many days, that he may see good,
Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.
Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.”
(Psalm 34:12–14 NKJV)
The psalmist gives us a simple but powerful formula for a long and good life: right speech, right actions, and a heart that pursues peace. Words are seeds, and the atmosphere we create with them either strengthens or shortens our days.
God links longevity to the way we use our tongue. When we speak evil, complain, or deceive, we invite corruption into our lives. But when we guard our words, speak truth, and chase peace, we invite the blessing of long and peaceful days.
This passage is echoed in 1 Peter 3:10–11, reminding believers that this principle still applies under grace. The wisdom of life and many days comes from a tongue trained by righteousness and a heart set on peace.
Point to Ponder:
Am I guarding my words so that they build life, or am I allowing careless speech to work against the peace I desire?
📣Declaration:
My tongue is an instrument of life. I speak truth, peace, and blessing, and my words strengthen the years of my life.
🙏 Suggested Prayer:
Lord, set a guard over my mouth and keep watch over my lips. Let every word that leaves my tongue carry Your peace and power. Teach me to speak what builds up, not what tears down, so that my days may be long and my heart full of good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
