Teaching: The Two Dimensions of the Spirit’s Power

The Holy Spirit operates in two distinct but harmonious ways in the life of a believer: within and upon.

The Spirit within is the indwelling presence of God given for your personal growth, strength, and fellowship. Jesus said it would be “a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14). That inner anointing teaches you, comforts you, and empowers you to live in health and peace every day.

The Spirit upon is the empowering presence of God given for ministry—to serve, edify, and bring deliverance to others. When the gifts of the Spirit are in operation—whether healing, prophecy, or tongues with interpretation—they manifest outwardly to bless those around you. That’s the “river” of the Spirit Jesus spoke of: “Out of your belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38).

Many ministers emphasize that the gifts are for others, not for ourselves. That’s true as a matter of purpose, but not of limitation. The same Holy Spirit who flows through you to heal others is also the Spirit who dwells within you for your own life and wholeness.

If no one is near to pray for you, you can still lay hands on yourself in faith, releasing the divine life that already abides within you. You’re not “ministering to yourself” as if you were two separate people—you’re simply drawing from the well within and allowing that inner anointing to bring health to your body.

Paul’s teaching on tongues illustrates this perfectly: there is a public use that edifies the church (1 Cor. 12:10, 14:5) and a private use that edifies the believer (1 Cor. 14:4). The same principle applies to all manifestations of the Spirit. There is a gift upon you for others and an anointing within you for you.

Reflection Question

Where have you limited the flow of God’s power by assuming it must always come through someone else? How can you begin to draw from the anointing that already abides within you?

Prayer Declaration

Father, thank You for the precious Holy Spirit—both within me and upon me.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead dwells in me, giving life to my mortal body.

I draw from that well of living water within and release the healing, peace, and strength of Christ in every area of my life.

Rivers of living water flow out of me to bless others, and that same power renews me daily.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
